
We present the last part of our list of films that you shouldn’t miss at the 57th Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, which will take place from November 5th – 22nd (2020) in Taipei, Taiwan.
About the festival:
The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (TGHFF) is the largest film festival in Taiwan. Starting in 1980 as a non-competitive showcase, TGHFF aims at introducing prominent cinema from around the world, in order to promote cinema as an art form and to enhance intercultural understanding through cinema.
Critically acclaimed filmmakers who have visited TGHFF throughout the years include Abbas Kiarostami, Hal Hartley, Atom Egoyan, Olivier Assayas, François Ozon, Theo Angelopoulos, Krzysztof Zanussi, Jean-Pierre Dardenne & Luc Dardenne, Nicolas Winding Refn, Cristian Mungiu, Denis Villeneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Leos Carax. Renowned Asian filmmakers such as Nagisa Oshima, Morita Yoshimitsu, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Yasmin Ahmad, Shunji Iwai, Kim Ki-duk, Lee Chang-dong, Hirokazu Koreeda, Brillante Mendoza, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul also have attended the festival.

Section: Golden Horse Awards Nominated Films
The film centres around three condemned prisoners who committed different crimes, with one still serving his sentence, one who has taken his own life in prison, and one already executed. Consisting of unembellished interviews and news footage, the film shows the director’s concern for the condemned prisoners and their families as human beings; moreover, it examines the contemporary history of capital punishment in Taiwan and questions the current judicial system. Mekong 2030 is a film anthology comprising five short stories that envision the future of the Mekong River from different cultural perspectives. Set in the year 2030, it aims to inspire audiences to actively protect this critical life source. (TGHFF 2020)

Best friends Mickey and Gin Gin are scraping by in southern Taiwan. When Gin Gin plans a rendezvous with Jay in Guangzhou, China, Mickey goes along, hoping to track down her missing father. Immediately, they find themselves immersed in China’s lawlessness and betrayal but also lured by new desires and pleasures. Through misadventures, the rascally naive pair seem to mature overnight. She is a good woman living a fulfilling life. Or so it seems. A caring mother, a capable housewife and a successful career woman, she looks after her mother with dementia on her own. What she needs is a little more space but somehow, she just can’t find any. She decides to buy a house since she believes that a bigger place will make her family happy. (TGHFF 2020)

Section: Windows on Asia
Everyone in the old apartment block is in debt. The residents gamble, hoping to keep their homes. 14-year-old Ròm works as bookie and helps the residents win. Phúc kidnaps Ròm and takes all of the bets. When Ròm finally comes back, the creditors threaten that if their debts are not paid off, they will take the apartments.
