We continue with our list of films you cannot miss at the 54th Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival 2017 that will take place from November 3rd – 24th, in Taipei (Taiwan).

Love and Goodbye and Hawaii by Matsumura Shingo – Japan | 2017 – 94 min.

Rinko has been living with Isamu for three years. They have decided to break up, but are still living together. Rinko feels that she still loves Isamu. One day, Rinko finds out that a young girl who studies with Isamu has feelings for him. And it seems that Isamu is becoming attracted to her. Now, Rinko is faced with a tough decision.

Mother intends to relocate Grandpa’s grave so he could be re-buried with Grandma. However, her decision sparkles a conflict with Nana, Grandpa’s first wife. Weiwei, caught between her mother and Nana, is turning the fight over the grave into a reality TV show. However, after having spent time with Nana, she learns a new understanding of life.

Marlina the murderer in four acts by Mouly Surya – Indonesia | 2017 – 93 min.

In the deserted hills of an Indonesian island, Marlina, a young widow, is attacked and robbed of her cattle. To defend herself, she kills several men of the gang. Seeking justice, she goes on a journey for empowerment and redemption. But the road is long especially when the ghost of her headless victim begins to haunt her.

One night, four high school boys decide to steal a safe and unexpectedly capture a little monster. Meanwhile, the little creature’s monster companion has been searching for it since they get separated. As the monster approaches, the boys’ minds become twisted and their friendship put to the test. In the end, everyone turns into a monster…

11-year-old Yijie works alongside her parents in a recycling facility. Through Yijie’s story, the film explores how the wastes are recycled by the workers’ bare hands and their dilemma. Through their eyes and hands, the film looks into the impact of the global consumption of plastics on these workers’ lives and the environment.

Ah Qiang desperately tries to see Hui Shan but he has no documents to prove their relationship. As their mother has mental problems, Ah Qiang is forced to face the incident alone.

11-year-old Stonehead lives in a remote village deserted by the parents who leave their children in the care of older relatives. In this community devoid of male role models, Stonehead yearns to establish contact with his long-absent father and gain his approval. He and his classmates struggle to find their moral compass as they learn how to “be a man”.

Hsiao-kang is recuperating from an illness in the mountains. His late mother visits him and cooks for him. But he is unable to eat the food. A female ghost lives next door to him. Like his mother, she’s unable to enter his life. The only companion he can speak with is a lone fish.

The Foolish Bird by Huang Ji and Otsuka Ryuji – China | 2017 – 117 min.

Winter is coming to a small town in southern China, when 16-year-old Lynn, a ‘left-behind’ child who grew up with her grandparents, prepares for the university entrance exams. Often getting bullied at school, she steals mobile phones and sells them to men she doesn’t know. As she takes risks, she has her first sexual experience – a cruel one.
