15 Short Films you shouldn’t miss at the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival

These are fifteen short films you shouldn’t miss at the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival, which will take place from April 28 until May 7, 2022.

**29th Breath** by Kook Joong-yi – Korea | 2022 – 27 minutes
**Section**: Korean Competition for Shorts | World Premiere

Ah-ee didn’t set out to play a zombie from the start. All she wanted was a new challenge that would expand her acting spectrum. After a while, she realizes she’s not getting anywhere and vows never to play a zombie again. Yet, she once again finds herself in the same role. Tired and jaded, Ah-ee starts releasing her emotions on set in a whole new way. (JIFF 2022)

Through overlapping poetic narratives and coded references, the film reflects on recent unprecedented shifts in the socio-cultural fabric of the artist’s homeland of Hong Kong, creating a site of remembrance for a time and place that may never be as it was. (JIFF 2022)

Seon-ji and Jin-hee were friends but become sisters-in-law when Jin-hee marries Seon-ji’s older brother. As they prepare food for ancestral rites together, Seon-ji is bothered by the way Jin-hee treats her mother. (JIFF 2022)

Yomi and Hun pretend to be lovers and spend one night. Yomi gives Hoon her phone number and offers to pretend to be her fiancé, and she asks to go see someone else’s house. Thus, the real couple lives in the house they visit, and Yomi and Hun become entangled in their conflict. When Yomi is faced with a series of situations different from what she wanted to see, she eventually runs out of the house. (JIFF 2022)

Ji Ran is a black sheep in the family. But Soyoung, 12 years old, considers Ji Ran the coolest in the world. This is a thrilling story of her “breast growth.” In the era of COVID-19, the family has a hard time. Even though the family is busy with their own concerns, Soyoung’s heart grows in a dream. **Piggyback Ride** by Choi Jihoon, Haam Yuni – Korea | 2021 – 26 minutes

Jooyoung and Yeonwoo decide to call it quits after three years of dating. They meet up in front of an artificial waterfall and start climbing the mountain towards the crest. Along the way, they get mad at each other and throw things only to make up and share a conversation. Once they reach the top, Yeonwoo makes a suggestion. He’ll give Jooyoung a piggyback, so she can tell him what the waterfall looks like.(JIFF 2022)

Jiho’s sister comes home fifteen years after she went missing. Together with her sister and mother, Jiho goes around Seoul to remove the missing person posters that her family put up. (JIFF 2022)

**The Owners** by Jo Heeyoung – Korea | 2022 – 20 minutes
**Section**: Korean Competition for Shorts | World Premiere

Two friends have recently broken up with their lovers. While taking a walk in a forest in Seoul, they find a bag on a bench. After some time, they travel to Gangwon-do to have their fortunes read. Someone appears out of the blue and yells that the bag is hers. (JIFF 2022)

**Trade** by Kim Minju – Korea | 2021 – 29 minutes
**Section**: Korean Competition for Shorts | World Premiere

Do-kyung struggles to get ahead, while Byeong-tae already fell behind a long time ago. A dejected youth, Do-kyung juggles her studies and part-time work at a convenience store. Meanwhile, Byeong-tae is burdened by his mother’s hospital bills. Just when he sees a light at the end of the tunnel, Do-kyung ruins everything. An inevitable showdown between the two begins. (JIFF 2022)

Launched in 2000, Jeonju IFF is now recognized as Mecca of independent film festival of Asia and the widest window of avant-garde cinema around the world. While you can find latest waves of Korean independent scene in Korean Film Competition, International Competition introduces new talents across the world and showing the potential of new cinematic aesthetics.
