10 Short films you shouldn’t miss at the 47th Hong Kong International Film Festival

These are ten short films you shouldn’t miss at the Hong Kong International Film Festival which will take place onsite and online from March 30 until April 10, 2023.

Calls by Chiang Ming-Wei – Poland | 2022 – 18 minutes

The emergency call center 112 receives numerous phone calls every day. Connecting with various situations, big and small, the operators know no bounds in taking care of diverse callers. But when the day is done, who will help them deal with their own emotions? (HKIFF 2023)

An old man dreams about the Bukhansan Mountain perpetually covered with snow, while a young woman sees the mountain grows taller after an earthquake. Little by little, the worlds of fantasy and reality collide, exposing an invisible universe. (HKIFF 2023)

Perfect City: The Bravest Kid by Zhou Shengwei – China, USA | 2023 – 6 minutes

In this second episode of the ‘Perfect City’ series, the world of fear is constructed by paper and metal. A paper boy dreaming of being chased by a big iron knife hand has to confront his real fears when he comes to realise its source. (HKIFF 2023)

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Alvin Lee – Singapore | 2022 – 19 minutes

Three estranged children are shocked when a funeral director told them that their father has already been cremated by mistake. In order not to lose face in front of their guests, they decide to proceed with the sham funeral. (HKIFF 2023)

Snow in September by Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir – France, Mongolia | 2022 – 20 minutes

Mongolian teenager Davka and his classmate Anuka like to talk about manga and tease each other about sex. A confusing encounter with a mysterious middleaged woman changes his ideas about intimacy and relationships, and the way he moves through the world. (HKIFF 2023)

Southern Afternoon by Lan Tian – Taiwan | 2022 – 16 minutes

Discovering that his teenage daughter has received a possible love-letter, a Uyghur father living in Southern China is desperate to resolve his doubt. Unable to read Chinese, he can only ask his little daughter for help to read him the letter. (HKIFF 2023)

The Thing with Feathers by Xu Tianlin – Germany | 2022 – 20 minutes

An Iranian-Afghan family’s life in Germany can be solely seen through their hands. Maryam sticks to a daily studying routine, hoping to return to her medical career, while her husband receives a job interview, seeking to become a photographer. (HKIFF 2023)

When You Left Me on That Boulevard by Kayla Abuda Galang – USA | 2023 – 13 minutes

A second-generation Filipino-American, teenager Ly’s reticence seems like a mismatch with her spirited cousins and her boisterous family who get high at a Thanksgiving party at their auntie’s house in San Diego. Short Film Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. (HKIFF 2023)
